Nurses immigration to Canada in 2026
If you're a nurse planning to relocate to Canada and you feel overwhelmed with all the information online, this news is for you.
People ask a whole lot of questions such as:
– Is ENLEX the first thing that I need to do?
– Can I get a job from outside of Canada?
– What is NAS?
– Is Express Entry still realistic for nurses?
And a whole lot of other questions.
So, we'll advise you to get a paper and pen and take down some things today as we break down the whole process with you.
We'll be breaking this news into several parts.
Where do nurses actually fit?
Nurses fall under the Canada healthcare category, which is one of the category-based Express Entry draws. That tells you something — Canada is prioritizing healthcare workers.
Also, nurses are very, very eligible because there's a widespread shortage of nurses practically in all the provinces. But you need to understand something: eligibility does not mean automatic invitation.
You still need to do several things such as:
- Having a competitive CRS score
- Having a language test
- Aligning yourself with the correct NOC
Finally, you also probably need a provincial nomination or an employer support. That is why, in this case, strategy matters.
Immigration vs Licensing
Immigration gives you permission to live and work in Canada, while licensing gives you permission to work as a nurse in Canada. These two run side by side.
You can start your immigration without being licensed yet in Canada, but you cannot practice as a nurse without completing your licensing process.
Main pathways for nurses
- Express Entry – Healthcare Category
Very competitive because of CRS score. Last year, the lowest was 462, with many draws in the 470s. - Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
Often requires a job offer or having started your licensing process. Once you get PNP, it adds 600 CRS points automatically. - Work Permit to PR
The most common and popular pathway for nurses. Requires that you have started your licensing process.
What is NAS?
NAS is not a license. NAS is an assessment body that verifies your nursing education, registration, and work experience.
NAS typically takes 6–12 months, sometimes longer. Our candid advice: start NAS first, even before IELTS. Your school sends documents directly to NAS, not you.
English Test
Most nurses need IELTS Academic or OET Nursing for licensing.
For IRCC Express Entry, IELTS General is required.
Many nurses end up doing both IELTS Academic and General.
Common mistakes nurses make
- Waiting for one perfect pathway
- Thinking ENLEX guarantees immigration (it does not)
- Underestimating CRS score reality
- Paying agents who promise shortcuts
- Starting late
Checklist — what should you do now?
- Understand your immigration options (Express Entry, PNP, Work Permit)
- Know the right NOC for you
- Start NAS
- Prepare for IELTS or OET
- Don’t rush — plan strategically
